Orbit World Travel has prepared this update to help travellers plan ahead as the European Union rolls out its new Entry/Exit System (EES), which is currently contributing to delays at several major airports across Europe.
Why These Delays Are Happening
The EES introduced new border processing requirements for non-EU travellers, including biometric data collection such as fingerprints and facial recognition, which have been effectively operating from 10th April 2026. While designed to enhance security and improve efficiency over time, the rollout phase has resulted in longer processing times at passport control.
Airports across Europe are adjusting to the new system, with early reports indicating wait times of up to four to six hours in some locations.
What Travellers Are Experiencing
- Extended queues at passport control and EES kiosks
- Processing delays of several hours at peak times
- Increased likelihood of missed connections on tight itineraries
- Congestion at major international entry points across Europe
Where to Find the Latest Updates
Travellers are encouraged to stay informed through official and trusted sources:
Airline updates and notifications via your carrier’s website or app are also recommended prior to travel.
Orbit Recommendations for Travellers
To help minimise disruption, travellers heading to Europe are advised to:
- Allow additional time between connecting flights
- Arrive at the airport well ahead of departure times
- Consider flexible fares where possible
- Prepare for longer queues at border control and EES kiosks
- Monitor updates from airlines and official travel advisory sources
While some countries may offer mobile pre-registration options, this does not replace in-person processing, and delays may still occur.
